A recent 4.8 magnitude earthquake, felt across New York and New Jersey, prompted a wave of reports from residents in Staten Island, New York at around 10:20 a.m. on April 5, 2024. Residents who reported to have felt the quake, are now concerned and alerted. The quake’s reach was surprisingly extensive, with reports even coming from as far away as New Hampshire. This seismic event has reminded us once again of the unpredictable nature of tectonic activity.
One notable report came from an individual expressing concern of their son, who felt the quake in his house. The resident, who communicated via anonymity, stated, “My son says he felt it in his house in New Hampshire.”
This incident has not led to any known severe damages or injuries, but it is a reminder of the importance of cities’ and states’ preparedness. Residents are advised to update their disaster plans and emergency kits. “In case of aftershocks: get down on the floor, cover your head and neck, and take additional cover under a solid piece of furniture, next to an interior wall, or in a doorway.” Says New York City mayor, Eric Adams. In the meantime, stay informed about seismic activity in the areas and prioritize safety.
