Port-au-Prince, July 7, 2021. In the early morning, the Haitian nation and the rest of the world woke up in shock, with the assassination of de facto President Jovenel Moise in his private residence at Pèlerin 5, commune of Pétion-Ville, by a foreign commando according to the outgoing Prime Minister. The First Lady Martine Moise was seriously injured and remained at the hospital
Although the population stayed in a confusion state at first, as the government is known for his diversionary tactic. Even the journalists were also perplexed because of the unauthentic message from the Prime Minister on social networks which was not published on any of the government official page. It was only after the intervention of outgoing Prime Minister Claude Joseph that the country came to believe in this sad reality
The facts: a group of terrorists entered Jovenel Moise’s residence and murdered Haiti’s best-protected man and injured his wife in the process. This historical event remains unclear. The authorities are not giving any details on the scenario at this time such as: How many Haitian police officers are victims? How many terrorists have USGPN agents arrested? As Claude Joseph clarified in the message that they spoke Spanish, how did the assailants get the country clearance?
Although the MAGHAITI Media Group has always been very critical of the disastrous management of Jovenel Moise, who has driven the country into chaos for the past four (4) years, we cannot support the assassination of a president in office, nor violence. This is a direct attack on the largest institution in the country, which is the Presidency, the only Haitian institution that was still functional up to this point. It is an attack on democracy, against the Haitian people who have just been humiliated on the international stage. Our pride as a people has been sullied, now staring at each other in consternation, we are in mourning.
If in the past we have denounced the massacre of people of Saline, Carrefour Feuilles, those of Bel-Air and more recently the killing of Delmas 32, it is our duty as well to condemn this villainous act committed on Jovenel Moise and his wife. We demand justice for the former president and all the other victims of this terrorist attack. No one should be slaughtered like a wild animal, regardless of rank or political ideology.
Jovenel had enemies and some political opponents. Badly surrounded by advisers who believe they have the strongest and most vibrant knowledge-based politics, the ex-president was moving step by step in the wrong direction. Attacks on the private sector, his obsession with changing the constitution by referendum, his mismanagement of public administration at all levels, have made him the most unpopular Haitian Head of State. But he lost his life a martyr’s death!
The Doctor of Political Science, Frédéric Thomas, who is in charge of study at the Tricontinental Center (CETRI), based in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, qualifies this tragedy as the collapse of political institutions in Haiti, which essentially results in by the reign of impunity, both based upon acts of corruption, yet documented and denounced, of human rights violations and massacres. He advises Haitians to take their distance from the type of wording of the message of the prime minister which indirectly points the finger at our neighbors.
Doctor Frédéric Thomas is right, it is the last state institution that has just collapsed. Today, the country is at the mercy of the armed gangs who control every piece of land in the territory and under the threat of these commandos whose origin is unknown. We are America’s new Somalia, democracy is in danger in Haiti!
In the turmoil, we wish our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Jovenel Moise, good recovery to his wife Martine Moïse. And as far as the Haitian justice, launch into action to identify and punish the culprits.
